Installing Stair Runners on Turning or Winding Stairs

Keith Shannon here. Installing a carpet runner on a straight run is a fairly straightforward job. But when you hit a 90-degree turn or a winding staircase, things get interesting. I’ve spent 25 years fitting runners in homes from Hamilton to Vancouver, and the secret to a pro finish on angled stairs isn't magic—it’s math and templates.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to measure, template, and cut your carpet to ensure a perfect fit with zero wasted material. This is exactly how we do it in my shop.

Step 1: Examine the Staircase

Visually inspect the flight. Are the angled stairs (winders) all the same size? Usually, they aren't. In many older homes in Toronto or Ottawa, every winder has slightly different dimensions. Take your time here. Making a paper pattern for each individual angled stair is the only way to avoid expensive cutting mistakes.

The Pro Tool Kit

To get a "Hollywood wrap" on winding stairs, you need the right gear. You can find these at most local tool rentals in the GTA or buy them for your kit:

  • Carpet Trimming Knife: Essential for precision shapes.
  • Carpet Stretcher: You need this to pull the tension tight so the runner doesn't "bubble."
  • Carpet Tucker: For those crisp, no-fray edges.
  • Heavy-Duty Craft Paper: For your templates (don't use thin newspaper).
  • Measuring Tape & Chalk.

The Paper Template Secret

Don't guess. Use your craft paper to make a template for each individual angled stair. Even if they look identical, winders can differ by half an inch, which is enough to ruin your alignment.

How to do it: Start at the back of the lowest tread. Secure the paper with tape, smooth it over the tread, around the bullnose, and down the riser. Cut away the excess until the paper perfectly mimics the shape of the stair. Mark the number of the stair on the pattern and indicate which side is "Up." Trust me, you don't want to cut your carpet upside down!

Don't Forget the Underlay

If you’re using our premium underlay, use the same paper template, but trim it one inch shorter all the way around. This ensures the underlay is hidden while providing that plush, luxury feel under the carpet.

Installing the Runner

Once your underlay is tacked down, fit your carpet piece by piece. Work from the bottom up. For each angled winder, trim away excess carpet slowly, leaving just enough to wrap securely around the nose and tack into the wooden stair. If you aren't sure, don't cut yet. Measure twice, cut once.

Master Tip: Many homeowners in Mississauga and Oakville actually prefer to have us pre-make their 90-degree landings in our Hamilton facility. It saves hours of frustration!
